CULTURE

Hotazel College maintains the profound belief that human existence is embedded in cultural background. The development of each learner's cultural consciousness is therefore held dearly by all teachers involved. This aspect of every learner’s educational need is considered to be of essential importance for child development in general. Consequently, an extraordinary wide range of cultural activities are offered by Hotazel College.

MUSIC

Here at Hotazel College learners are exposed to music appreciation and encouraged to produce music.

Learners in Grade RRR to Grade R are stimulated through movement, listening skills, singing, music instruments and social performances.

Grade 1 to 3-learners are introduced to music and percussion band instruments. They also learn to sing new children’s songs and hymns.

During Grade 4 to Grade 6 music education is focused on musicals, genres, various arts and primary music theory.

Exposure to contemporary music, music artists and music history forms an integral part of music education in Grades 7 – 9.

CHOIR:

The choir performs at special assemblies, prize giving ceremonies and church services. Learners from Grade 4 – 9 have to take part in auditions before they may become choir members. Choir practices take place on Tuesdays. At present there are 55 members in the choir.

PIANO LESSONS:

The aim of piano lessons at Hotazel College is to offer the opportunity to each learner to develop his or her music talent to the full.

GUITAR:

Hotazel College also guitar lessons. Learners often get the opportunity at social events to show their talent. These performances include culture evenings, community events and school functions.

RECORDER LESSONS

Recorder lessons take place on a weekly basis. Learners are subjected to individual attention so that basic techniques could be significantly mastered.

ART

In the Art Department of Hotazel College we attempt to discover and apply the various mediums which are used to create art .

In these classes learners are guided on how to draw and where to start. Nowadays, many children are not stimulated to get involved in art activities in their spare time. Therefore they are being motivated in art classes to participate in the wide variety of activities which are provided.

Each learner completes a number of art works during each term. Two of these works are normally used in the art exhibition.

Primarily, the goal of art classes is that every learner should discover his or her individual way of thinking and find a means to express his or her ideas. Learners get the opportunity to draw, paint, make collages and create a combination of art forms.

The art curriculum varies in the different grades but all learners do get the opportunity to take part in art. The lower grades more overly draw, cut and paint elementary forms. The intermediate phase learners do tasks where the focus is on the development and the discovery of the self. In the senior phase the focus shifts to art in our country and art from overseas.

From 2013 Visual Arts will be introduced as a formal subject of the FET Phase in the curriculum of Hotazel College.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

At the beginning of 2012 Public Speaking was introduced at Hotazel College. Quite a number of learners attended the training sessions and Johanné Strydom (Grade 2) and Marigreth van Zyl (Grade 6) took part in the first round of the ATKV Competition in Kakamas where they did well. At a competition in Kuruman at Seodin Primary School, Johanné won the competition in her age group. We are of the opinion that Public Speaking will become a well-sought after skill at Hotazel College in future.

DANCING

At the beginning of 2012 Ballet, Tap and Modern Ballet were introduced at Hotazel College as part of the extra-mural programme.

Dancers will be granted the opportunity to dance examinations in all three these disciplines on a yearly basis.

Examiniations Syllabi are danced on a National level which applies to affiliated dancers throughout the country.
